Last week Vertex Pharmaceuticals released positive Phase III results for its suzetrigine for moderate-to-severed pain. Belgium’s UCB revealed that Swiss pharma giant Roche was terminating its collaboration on the Alzheimer’s candidate bepranemab. The UK’s health technology assessor the Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) declined to recommend a second Alzheimer’s treatment, this time Eli Lilly’s Kisunla. Also of note, Lyell Immunopharma announced its planned acquisition of ImmPACT Bio and reprioritization of its own clinical pipeline. 27 October 2024

The US unit of UK drug giant GlaxoSmithKline yesterday launched the GSK Vaccines Access Program, which will provide the company's adult vaccines free of charge to eligible, low income individuals who do not have insurance coverage for vaccines. In an address to the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany today, US drug major Eli Lilly's chairman and chief executive, John Lechleiter, said that innovation holds the key to solving one of health care's thorniest dilemmas: how to improve quality and access while controlling costs. He described how innovative medicines - which have helped dramatically increase lifespans of both Germans and Americans over the past century - could further improve people's health, replace more expensive treatments, and provide strong economic benefits by generating thousands of research jobs. 25 March 2010

The French Transparency Commission, which recommends medicines' reimbursement prices under the country's health system, has given a low rating to domestic drug major Sanofi-Aventis' cardiovascular drug Multaq (dronedarone), according to a report by the local newspaper La Tribune, causing the company's shares to drop as much as 3% before recovering for a dip of 0.4% to 56.33 euros yesterday, as investors reassessed their views on the drug's potential. 24 March 2010

The Canadian pharmaceutical market is expected to continue on an upward compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.55% in US dollar terms and 4.3% in local currency terms, according to Business Monitor International. Growth will be driven by the ageing population which will increase demand for chronic diseases medicines. BMI also expects pricing reforms to influence this outlook, although until patented and generic drug prices are more aligned across provinces and territories we will maintain our current view on spending. 23 March 2010

Along with Malta and Denmark, Germany is the only European country where pharmaceutical companies can set prices for branded drugs with no interference from the state. That is about to change, according to German Health Minister Philipp Roesler. The Belgian pharmaceutical trade group pharma.be has issued a strong rebuttal of an article published last week in the local newspaper Le Soir, saying that drug spending by the country's Health Insurance Agency, the INAMI, of 3.2 billion euros ($4.37 billion) increased 12.5% in 2008 compared to 2007 and volume (4.2 billion in 2008) had seen a rise of 6%. Le Soir thus concludes that the average cost per unit of medicine has increased significantly, it points out. 8 March 2010

The Greek pharmaceutical market is the largest in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). After consecutive years of high level growth, levels of per-capita spending are now among the highest in the world. These figures make Greece attractive on face value and the market places first in the Business Monitor International anaylsts' Business Environment Ratings for first-quarter 2010 largely as a result. The drug reference price system introduced in Finland last spring was expected to boost price competition and direct patients towards more inexpensive generic medicines. According to the pharmaceutical wholesale index, the price drop was significant. However, according to the country's trade group - the Pharma Industry Finland (PIF) - innovative medicines continue to account for an unchanged share of total pharmaceutical sales but their prices have decreased dramatically. The wholesale index shows that the prices of reimbursable medicines were 5.6% down, the PIF notes. 1 March 2010

US drug major Eli Lilly has been fined by Mexico's antitrust commission for price collusion, the firm disclosed in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing, saying that federal prosecutors and the SEC have expanded a probe into the company's compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977, Bloomberg reported. 25 February 2010
