Other deal-making included Gilead Sciences entering an agreement to license Jounce Therapeutics’ JTX-1811 immunotherapy program, and AbbVie and China’s I-Mab Biopharma signing a deal for the commercialization of cancer candidate lemzoparlimab, worth up to $2 billion to I-Mab. 6 September 2020

Last week’s notable news included Vertex Pharmaceuticals receiving earlier-than-expected approval in Europe for its Kaftrio plus ivacaftor for multiple sclerosis. Also scoring European approval last week was GlaxoSmithKline’s Blenrep for multiple myeloma. The authorization by US President Donald Trump administration, via the Food and Drug Administration, of emergency use for convalescent plasma to treat COVID-19 patients has raised questions on the agency’s credibility. On the M&A front, Yumanity Therapeutics announced it is merging with Proteostasis, to leverage protein misfolding to advance programs for neurodegenerative diseases, including Yumanity’s Parkinson’s disease candidate YTX-7739. 30 August 2020

Last week’s notable news included French pharma major Sanofi last Monday announcing it was buying US firm Principia Biopharma for $3.68 billion, along with its BTK inhibitors SAR442168 for multiple sclerosis and rilzabrutinib for autoimmune diseases. Also, Johnson & Johnson announced its biggest acquisition since that of Actelion for $30 billion in 2017, when it agreed to buy Momenta Pharmaceuticals for $6.5 billion, taking in the autoimmune diseases candidate nipocalimab. Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries took a hit last Tuesday when the US Department of Justice sued the company over kickbacks relating to its top-selling multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone. And last Wednesday, US biotech Regeneron Pharmaceuticals enlisted help from Swiss giant Roche to develop and manufacture its REGN-COV2, an antibody cocktail for the treatment of COVID-19. 23 August 2020

Also of note, Lexicon’s type I diabetes drug Zynquista faced a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee review that resulted in largely negative vote against recommendation. 3 November 2024

Last week’s significant news included Denmark-based CNS drugmaker Lundbeck reaching agreement to acquire US firm Longboard Pharmaceuticals, along with its bexicaserin, for $2.6 billion. Also, US pharma giant Pfizer entered into a deal with TRIANA Biomedicines to develop molecular glue degraders. On the regulatory front, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week approved Novocure’s key product Optune Lua for lung cancer patients. Also, German biotech BioNTech and its US partner OncoC4 received a partial clinical hold from the FDA on the Phase III trial of gotistobart in lung cancer. The European Medicines Agency’s human health committee, CHMP, Reaffirmed its non-approval of PTC Therapeutic’s Translarna. 20 October 2024
