Based on growth and aging of the US population, medical expenditures for cancer in the year 2020 are projected to reach at least $158 billion (in 2010 dollars) - an increase of 27% over 2010, according to a National Institutes of Health analysis. If newly developed tools for cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up continue to be more expensive, medical expenditures for cancer could reach as high as $207 billion, said the researchers from the National Cancer Institute, part of the NIH. The analysis appears on-line in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. 14 January 2011

It is anything but a happy new year for German pharma. The government's drug price reforms, which have now been enacted, will make a 'severe' dent in the sector's revenues, noted Cornelia Yzer, general manager of the German pharmaceutical association, the VFA. The mandatory discount drug firms must offer state health insurers has risen from 6% to 16%, and a three-year price freeze will last until the end of 2013. 14 January 2011

South Korea has a highly developed and growing economy, which is reflected in Business Monitor International's forecast for the country's pharmaceutical market. Drug market expenditure is forecast to reach almost 19,327 billion won ($19.33 billion) at consumer prices in 2014, with a forecast compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1% in local currency terms, supported by an aging population with rising demand for drugs as well as the planned liberalization of the health insurance sector. By 2019, pharmaceutical expenditure is expected to have reached 26,500 billion won ($26.50 billion). 14 January 2011

With the recent regulatory disposition, the Turkish pharmaceutical industry has granted an additional discount of 9.5% to the Social Security Institution (SGK), bearing the brunt of austerity measures this year, as had been the case last year, and demonstrating once more its readiness to make a sacrifice, as it did in numerous occasions in the past, to support the government in overcoming budget shortages and to preclude any untoward impact on patients' access to medicines, the research-based sector trade group the AiFD has announced. 23 December 2010

Dey Pharma, a subsidiary of US generic drugs maker Mylan (Nasdaq: MYL) says that it has settled a law suit brought against it by the US Department of Justice in September 2006 relating to Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements paid by the federal government to pharmacists and other health care providers. In exchange for a release of claims, Dey has agreed to pay $280 million. 22 December 2010

Belgium’s UCB revealed that Swiss pharma giant Roche was terminating its collaboration on the Alzheimer’s candidate bepranemab. The UK’s health technology assessor the Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) declined to recommend a second Alzheimer’s treatment, this time Eli Lilly’s Kisunla.
