India is to join an international system - the Pharmaceutical Inspection Convention and Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperation Scheme (PIC/S) - that fosters cooperation between countries and regulatory authorities on good manufacturing practices (GMPs) in order to improve the quality of its medical products.

A government official confirmed that as a member of the PIC/S, India is poised to enhance the quality of its medical products and improve market access. A number of incidents, including the tragic death of several children in Gambia related to toxic Indian cough syrups, have led to this decision, as well as difficulties in accessing the market for Indian medical products in quality-conscious regions such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

By joining the PIC/S, India will be able to adopt global standards. It would help pave the way for greater international cooperation and regulations, the official added.
PIC/S requires Indian industries, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises, to adhere to international standards, specifically addressing GMPs.
