India cracks down on counterfeit medicine manufacturers

A few days after the World Health Organization (WHO) flagged seven India-made syrups during a global investigation into contaminated medicines, India's Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has asserted that India follows a zero-tolerance policy on spurious medicines.

Some 71 companies have been issued show-cause notices following global concerns of contaminated drugs, and 18 of them have been ordered to shut shop, reports The Pharma Letter’s India correspondent.

Mr Mandaviya added an extensive risk-based analysis is carried out continuously to ensure the production of quality medicines in India. He emphasized that since India is known as the pharmacy of the world, it was time to assure all that India is the 'quality pharmacy of the world'.
