BRIEF—Finnish Alzheimer's study finds elevated risk of mortality for benzodiazepines

20 November 2017

A new study conducted at the University of Eastern Finland has found that benzodiazepine and related drug use is associated with a 40% increase in mortality among persons with Alzheimer’s disease.

The study found that the risk of death was increased from the beginning of benzodiazepine and related drug use.

The study’s authors say that the increased risk of death may result from adverse events,, including fall-related injuries, such as hip fractures, as well as pneumonia and stroke.

The trial was based on the MEDALZ (Medication Use and Alzheimer’s Disease) cohort, which includes everyone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in Finland during 2005 to 2011.

The findings were published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
