USA-based Watson Pharmaceuticals (NYSE: WPI) said yesterday that it has acquired Specifar Pharmaceuticals, a privately-held Greek generic pharmaceutical developer, manufacturer and marketer for 400 million euros ($562 million) in cash and certain contingent consideration. As a result of the buy, Watson gains a leading generic product development company that develops and out-licenses products throughout the world. 26 May 2011

Canada's Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (TSX: VRX), which was recently spurned in its $5.7 billion bid for USA-based Cephalon, which was snapped up by Teva for $6.8 billion (The Pharma Letter May 3), today announced that it has agreed to acquire Lithuania-based generics drugmaker AB Sanitas (Nasdaq OMX: SAN1L) for about 314 million euros ($444.4 million). 24 May 2011

US generics and niche drug company Par Pharmaceutical (NYSE: PRX) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held Chennai, India-based Edict Pharmaceuticals, a developer and manufacturer of generic pharmaceuticals, for up to $37.6 million in cash and Par's repayment of certain additional pre-close indebtedness. German drugmaker Stada Arzneimittel (SAZ: GR) is negotiating with family-owned Grunenthal the purchase of a branded product portfolio including the associated sales structures for numerous national markets in Central and Eastern Europe as well as in the Middle East. The USA's Federal Trade Commission will require Jordan-based drugmaker Hikma Pharmaceuticals (LSE: HIK; Dubai: HIK) to divest two generic injectable pharmaceuticals - phenytoin and promethazine - as part of a settlement allowing it to acquire certain assets from Baxter Healthcare. Hikma proposes to acquire Baxter's entire generic injectable pharmaceutical business for $111.5 million, including Baxter's Cherry Hill, New Jersey, manufacturing facility and a warehouse and distribution center in Memphis, Tennessee (The Pharma Letter October 29, 2010). 29 April 2011

India's Union Ministry Health has established a taskforce to address issues facing the country's pharmaceutical industry and evolve a long-term strategy for the sector, reports the local Business Standard newspaper, particularly with respect to the takeover of domestic drugmakers by multinational companies. According to reports in the German media, Iceland-based generic drugmaker Actavis (OMX: ACT) is currently planning its expansion through future acquisitions.
