Zika threat 'needs multi-pronged approach'

The growing threat of the Zika virus urgently needs improved detection methods as vaccine development faces and array of obstacles and is still years off, experts have warned.

The World Health Organization (WHO) fears four million people in the Americas could be infected over the next twelve months and scientists believe the crisis can only be tackled using a multi-pronged approach.

GlobalData’s infectious diseases analyst Mirco Junker said that, while a vaccine could be an effective measure in the long term, it remains several years away and faces numerous obstacles to development.
