US Senate panel unanimously backs nomination of Robert Califf as FDA head

The US Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee unanimously voted in favour of approval of Robert Califf as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In March, Mr Califf was nominated for the post by President Barack Obama following the resignation of former Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. Mr Califf is due to face a vote by the full Senate for final appointment.

Chairman Senator Lamar Alexander said: “The FDA affects every single American almost every single day. It’s vital that we have the right person leading that agency and that it have a confirmed leader.”
