The number of measles cases recorded in the USA was higher in the first quarter of 2019 than in the whole of 2018, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
With 387 reported so far, the number of cases is on course to exceed the 667 of 2014, which is currently the highest annual total since measles was, in theory, eliminated from the USA in 2000.
Since then, growing pockets of unvaccinated people and an increase in the number of travelers who pick up measles abroad and bring it back to the USA, have led to a new rise in the frequency of outbreaks and cases.
