Servier pulls Protelos from the market due to low usage

French company Servier is to stop producing and selling its osteoporosis treatment Protelos (strontium ranelate), the independent drugmaker has announced.

Pointing to a continued decrease in the drug’s usage, the company says that the label for the drug is too restrictive.

The drug was first approved in Europe in 2004. In 2013, European regulators recommended restrictions in the use of the drug, based on a routine benefit-risk assessment.
