New York City sues for $500 million in opioid-related damages
The USA's City of New York has initiated legal proceedings against eight opioid manufacturers and distributors, suing for half a billion dollars in damages to help fight the ongoing opioid addiction crisis.
New York joins a growing list of state and local government bodies to file suits against the pharmaceuticals industry, alleging that companies deliberately understated the risks of addiction from prescription opioids.
Addiction to such medications, which often leads to dependency on illegal opioids such as heroin, contributed to an estimated 59,000 deaths from overdose in 2016.
