Localization of pharmaceutical manufacturing in Egypt after the outbreak of COVID-19: Part One

The outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has brought the issue of localization to the forefront, which necessitated the need for localization of pharmaceutical manufacturing to achieve self-sufficiency and self-reliance, writes The Pharma Letter's local correspondent.

Local production aims to fulfill domestic needs, achieve self-reliance and economic resilience by reducing import costs, driving foreign direct investment and decreasing government spending, building skilled labor force, and fostering research and innovation to meet societal needs and create a sustainable competitive edge.

Pharmaceutical localization is a part of the comprehensive Egypt Vision 2030 which includes a suite of new planning reforms to reshape and develop the pharmaceutical sector in Egypt. Localization, along with sustainable development strategies, is one of the key pillars and objectives of the Egyptian government at present.
