India's vaccines quality control procedures under government scrutiny

Even as three contaminated batches of vaccines have been found with polio type 2 virus in India, a strain that has been eradicated worldwide including India, the Health Ministry has set up a three-member committee to probe if the virus, which was officially eradicated in India in March 2014, has resurrected. The incident has again turned the spotlight on the slipshod pharma quality control procedures in India, reports The Pharma Letter’s India correspondent.

Terming it a public health nightmare of huge proportions, a government official said the occurrence brings to the fore numerous bad manufacturing and risky quality control issues that continue to plague pharmaceutical companies.

The incident is also expected to deal a body blow to India's ability to supply vaccines to global agencies and the World Health Organization (WHO), the official added.
