India's "Modicare" launches with much fanfare, much less money

The world’s largest healthcare plan has been launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, providing free or subsidized coverage for the poorest 40% of India’s population.

Officially known as the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, the plan has been dubbed, with a certain degree of inevitability, ‘Modicare’.

It will see some half a billion Indians gain access to pharmaceuticals and other healthcare products and services. The 100 million poorest families will be eligible to receive nearly $7,000 worth of health insurance every year.
