Thousands of workers dismissed from the US Department of Health and Human Services this week may soon be reinstated, after health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr admitted that a significant share of the job cuts were made in error.
Speaking to reporters in Virginia on Thursday, Mr Kennedy said that about 20% of the layoffs carried out as part of a wide-reaching downsizing initiative had mistakenly affected essential staff. He indicated the department would move to rehire those workers.
“There were personnel who were cut that should not have been,” Mr Kennedy said, describing the reversals as part of a planned corrective step. He linked the process to the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which helped design the restructuring.
