Egypt is set to join BRICS next year as the bloc expands to include six new members, writes The Pharma Letter's Middle East and North Africa correspondent.
At the 15th BRICS Summit that was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 22 to 24 August 2023, the bloc announced that six new members would join founding members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (representing a quarter of the world's wealth). These new members are Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab of Emirates (UAE).
In fact, more than 40 countries showed interest in joining the BRICS bloc; however, only 24 countries officially requested to join and just six new nations have managed to formally join, with membership taking effect from January 1, 2024. The expanded bloc will account for some 46% of the world’s population.
