The face of the USA’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, Anthony Fauci, has announced he will step down from his role as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Dr Fauci, who said he plans to focus on personal projects outside of government following his retirement, has led the NIAID for 38 years and advised seven US presidents as Chief Medical Advisor, a role he will also step down from.
During his time, Dr Fauci has advised on emerging infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, as well as anthrax attacks, Ebola and the Zika virus.
