With the incidence of diabetes escalating across the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region, new research finds a worrying lack of awareness about the causes and risk factors that the disease poses for patients.
In the lead up to World Diabetes Day 2010 on November 14, Danish insulin giant Novo Nordisk (NVO: N) and market research firm Ipsos Emirates Health conducted a survey in 10 countries of the MENA region: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The survey, which was carried out in October this year, assesses the level of awareness among the general population when it comes to causes, risks and complications of diabetes. It also looks into respondents’ risk of developing diabetes. With over 3,000 interviews, the respondents were representative of the demographic and socio-economic profile in each country.
