MHRA approves GLP–1 receptor agonist Wegovy for new use

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has today approved a new indication for Wegovy (semaglutide) to reduce the risk of overweight and obese adults suffering serious heart problems or strokes.

The Danish diabetes and obesity giant Novo Nordisk’s (NOV: N) GLP-1 receptor agonist is already approved for use in the treatment of obesity and for weight management, to be used alongside diet, physical activity and behavioural support.

First quarter 2024 sales of Wegovy were 9.38 billion kroner ($1.37 billion), a 106% rise in the like 2023 period.
