US drugmaker Merck & Co is the most admired corporation in the USA for the seventh consecutive year, according to Fortune magazine's annual survey of corporate reputations. No other pharmaceutical company figures in the overall top ten.
The Fortune study is based on the opinions of some 8,000 senior executives, outside directors and security analysts in 32 industries, based on eight key parameters: quality of management; financial soundness; quality of products and services; ability to attract, develop and keep talented people; use of corporate assets; value as long-term investments; innovativeness; and the company's community and environmental responsibility.
Based on financial performance alone, Merck still heads the Fortune list, but here Bristol-Myers Squibb comes in at number seven, American Home Products at eight and Abbott Labs at number ten.
