US Senator Chuck Grassley (Republican, Iowa) is looking into how hospitals are using a discount prescription drug program, known as 340B. Certain hospitals appear to be making sizeable profits from the program at the expense of Medicare, Medicaid and private health insurance, he noted. Sen Grassley asked the federal agency in the charge of the program, the Health Resources and Services Administration, about its oversight of the program. 9 May 2013

US President Barack Obama $3.77 trillion budget proposal for fiscal 2014 delivers mixed news for the biopharmaceutical industry, according to BioWorld. The proposal's tax reforms may benefit small biotechs, but it would prevent major drugmakers from moving profits out of the country to avoid US taxes. While the proposal would raise the FDA'S budget to $4.7 billion, the agency would still see a $15 million decline in funding for its drug, medical device and biologics programs. 11 April 2013

A review to boost growth opportunities for universities and businesses in the UK has been launched by Universities and Science Minister David Willetts. The independent review will be led by Sir Andrew Witty, chief executive of UK pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline (LSE: GSK), who is also Chancellor of the University of Nottingham. As European Commission pressure mounts on India to rush into signing a free trade agreement (FTA) by mid-April, activists from across Europe mobilized in Brussels on Tuesday (April 9) to demand the EC withdraw provisions that will harm people's access to medicines in India and across the developing world. New figures from Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration show that the number of clinical trials undertaken in Australia has fallen for the fourth time in five years. The TGA's latest Half-Yearly Performance Report shows 602 new clinical trials were begun in Australia in 2012, down from 635 trials in 2011 - a decline of 5%. Clinical trial numbers are down 30% from their 2007 high of 865. 8 April 2013

A new law in the US state of Virginia signed into law last week by Governor Bob McDonnell - designed to address the regulatory issues related to the interchangeability of biological medicines - forbids pharmacists from dispensing a biosimilar substitution to a brand-name biologic drug if the prescribing physician specifies the prescription must be dispensed as written or if a patient wants the branded drug. 25 March 2013
