Globally, the country is placed 18th out of the 71 nations surveyed worldwide, indicating its vast potential. 8 February 2010

Canada's pharmaceuticals market should grow relatively slowly over the forecast period. Its value in 2008 was C$22.9 billion ($22 billion), according to a new report from Business Monitor International, whose authors expect this to rise to C$30 billion by the end of 2014, representing a compound average growth rate (CAGR) of 4.41% in Canadian dollar terms. In the longer term, the report forecasts that the Canadian drug sector will reach a value of C$35.1 billion in 2019, representing a CAGR of 3.18% in local currency terms. 5 February 2010

In a presentation given at the launch of the 2010 Green Budget, the UK think-tank the Institute of Fiscal Studies slammed the government's attempts of a tax break for patent income - dubbed the 'patent box' - as an 'expensive and poorly targeted policy' that would only benefit a few large companies. This would reduce corporate tax on income from patents from 28% to 10%, estimated to be worth around 1.3 billion ($2.08 billion). 4 February 2010

The prestigious British medical journal The Lancet, which originally published the discredited research linking autism and bowel disease and the childhood MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine - and which caused vaccination rates in the UK to plummet, resulting in a rise in measles - has now issued a full retraction of the paper. Karel De Gucht, the current European Commissioner for Development Assistance and a former Belgian Foreign Minister, is due to take over the trade portfolio in February. During his hearing, Memeber of the European Parliament David Martin (S&D, UK) asked whether the Commissioner-designate planned to facilitate trade in generic medicines to developing countries in need by applying Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)-plus provisions in free trade agreements. Mr Martin stated that "we spend millions tackling AIDS and other diseases in the developing world, but trade policy sometimes denies medicines to people." 2 February 2010

At its general assembly last month, Japan's Chuikyo (the Central Social Insurance Medical Council) revealed that the premium for the development of new drugs is to be set at 5.10%, slightly below the 5.13% announced-previously by the Korosho (Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare), which will be introduced on a trial basis from this April. 1 February 2010
