US President-elect George Bush has named Eli Lilly senior vice presidentMitchell Daniels as director of the Office of Management and Budget in his administration. Among Mr Daniels' tasks will be aiding the incoming President in the preparation of the budget and working to ensure the $1,300 billion, 10-year tax cuts that Mr Bush has promised are made. Mr Daniels has previously served as an adviser in the administration of President Ronald Reagan and also worked as Chief of Staff to Republican Senator Richard Lugar.
Mr Bush has named another pharmaceutical executive, Donald Rumsfeld, as Defence Secretary. Mr Rumsfeld is chairman of Gilead Sciences and a former chief executive of G D Searle (now part of Pharmacia). He previously held this defence post in 1975-77 in President Gerald Ford's administration.
