Sanofi to create leading European APIs company

As the world is gripped by an escalating epidemic originating in China – the novel coronavirus dubbed COVID-19 that is threatening not just lives but also medicines supplies - French pharma major Sanofi (Euronext: SAN) today announced its intention to establish its own manufacturing company for drug ingredients.

Sanofi plans to create a major leading European company dedicated to the production and marketing to third parties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), which are the essential molecules responsible for the beneficial effects used in the composition of any drug. Regardless of COVID-19, medicines shortages have been a factor in Europe for some time.

The project consists of creating a stand-alone company which would combine Sanofi’s API commercial and development activities with six of its European API production sites: Brindisi (Italy), Frankfurt Chemistry (Germany), Haverhill (UK), St Aubin les Elbeuf (France), Újpest (Hungary) and Vertolaye (France).
