Pharma exports from Gujarat grow exponentially

Pharmaceutical exports from the Indian state of Gujarat have crossed the $3 billion mark in the span of the last 10 years.

Gujarat features among the top pharmaceutical manufacturing hubs in India with an around 35% share in national production and 28% of pharmaceutical exports. The state has seen a six times increase in the growth of pharma exports in the last 10 years, notes a web posting by Brand India Pharma, an initiative led by Pharmexcil (Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council) and IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation) under the aegis of the Department of Commerce, India.

Pharma exports have increased from $562 million in 2006 to $3 billion in 2016. The state is home to more than 3,300 pharma manufacturing units, of which 255 are certified by the World Health Organization (WHO). 23 units are certified by Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency certified by the UK government and 15 European Union certified units. The state also has 100 bulk drug manufacturing units and 135 licensed medical devices manufacturers.
