The occasion of World AIDS Day was as good as any for India to launch a National Strategic Plan 2017-24, aimed at eradicating HIV/ AIDS by 2030. The country has over 2.1 million people living with HIV, the third largest number of people with HIV in the world, reports The Pharma Letter’s India correspondent.

Though there has been a 64% decline in the estimated number of annual new HIV infections in the country from 2000 to 2010, according to government data, and the trend has largely flat-lined between 2010 and 2015, a dire situation continues to persist.

"India is committed to 'Ending the AIDS' epidemic as a public health threat by 2030 in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The Indian government has reaffirmed this commitment at the United Nations General Assembly last year. However, sustained commitment and action would be needed to address the scale of challenges ahead," said an official.
