Canadian Rx drug sales data highlights increasing value of generics, says CGPA

The release of 2010 Canadian prescription drug sales information shows that generic prescription medicines have never offered greater value for Canadians, according to Jim Keon, president of the Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association (CGPA).

IMS Brogan, a source for prescription drug sales data, revealed that generic drugs were dispensed to fill fully 57% of all prescriptions in Canada, yet accounted for only 26% of the $22 billion spent annually on prescription drugs in Canada in 2010.

"As these figures highlight, generic drugs are providing excellent value for Canadians, and those savings are increasing," Mr Keon said, adding "In fact, generic drugs are the only component of Canadian health care where costs are actually decreasing."
