Privately-held American biotech X-Chem is to begin collaborating with Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: VRTX) to discover and develop novel small-molecule therapies.

X-Chem, which has a drug discovery platform with over 120 billion small molecules, will target multiple specialty diseases in return for an upfront payment and potential fees related to R&D, regulation and licensing.

Vertex, a cystic fibrosis specialist, will have the option to license lead-like hits discovered under the collaboration, and will be responsible for further development and commercialization of the resulting programs.
