A new fund to invest in vaccines for emerging infectious diseases has been established, with $460 million in contributions from the governments of Norway, Japan and Germany, the Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) made the announcement at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where it is seeking an additional $500 million from funders.

The group will invest in research to: “...outsmart epidemics by developing vaccines against known infectious disease threats that could be deployed rapidly to contain outbreaks, before they become global health emergencies.”
