The European Commission has granted marketing authorization to Laboratories Servier's osteoporosis therapy Protelos (stronium ranelate) in 27 European countries. This marks the first available agent with a dual action on bone metabolism, as it increases bone formation as well as decreasing bone resorption. In clinical trials, the agent reduced the risk of new vertebral fractures in women 49% after one year.
