US President Barack Obama has nominated Robert Califf for the role of Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr Califf, a cardiologist, will be replacing Stephen Ostroff, who has served as acting Commissioner since the resignation of Margaret Hamburg in March.
Dr Califf joined the agency earlier this year as its Deputy Commissioner for medical products and tobacco. Prior to that, he served as a professor of medicine and vice chancellor for clinical and translational research at Duke University.
